When Darwen finished bottom of the Football
League in 1899 and decided to reform, they lost the use of their
Barley Bank home. After looking at various sites around the
town, the committee eventually decided on The Anchor Ground,
which formerly had been open pasture attached to The Anchor
Farm. Much of the infrastructure for the new ground was brought
from Barley Bank including the main grandstand, and over the
following two or three seasons was made more and more into a
leading football venue.
