Kick It Out

1/9/2007 BOOTLE 5 DARWEN 2

Darwen suffered another heavy away defeat as Bootle deservedly won this match at Bucks Park.

The home team’s first chance came after five minutes as a through ball found O’Connor inside the area. He sliced his shot wide as Joe Darwin ran out to block. Fowler then gave the away side a taste of things to come, as he intercepted a Darwen throw, and raced on to put a volley just wide of the post.

After a rare attack at the other end, a Darwen corner was cleared easily and was picked up by Fowler, who sped down the wing, beating Stuart Telfer on the way. His cross found Dale, and Darwin had to make a fine save from the subsequent shot. Another run, cut in, and shot by Fowler forced the Darwen keeper to put the ball behind for a corner.

On 28 minutes, another cross from the left found Rainford unmarked on the edge of Darwen’s area. His attempt whistled by the post with keeper Darwin stranded. A goal seemed only a matter of time, and it appeared after 32 minutes when Rainford got his head to a cross, which looped over Darwin into the net.
07-08 BOOTLE V DARWEN - SLAVEN SAVE
Dennis Hill headed a dangerous cross away for a corner a minute later, but within another minute, Bootle did score a second as Fowler hit a low shot from the edge of the area through a crowd of players into the net.

It was 36 minutes before Mawdsley in the home goal was called into action, but only to catch a tame Darwen free kick floated into his area, but a minute later a passing mix-up between him and a defender enabled the alert Ben Stanford to get in between both players and scramble a goal.

07-08 BOOTLE V DARWEN - GOAL
The home team started the second half as they did the first, but the first real chance fell to Darwen as a diving header by Dominic Slaven was well saved by Mawdsley. A good Bootle attack released Fowler, whose jinking run beat Matt Anderton, and left him with only Joe Darwin to beat. The keeper rushed out to narrow the angle, and his actions did enough to make Fowler put his shot wide of goal.

Fowler was not to be denied, and three minutes later he latched onto a through ball with the away defence appealing for offside, and his volley gave Darwin no chance. Two more Bootle attacks were scrambled away by the Darwen defence, but another ball into the away side’s area could not be cleared, and Fowler side-footed it into the goal.

On 71 minutes, Black, near the goal-line, swivelled to hook a ball inside the post, but Joe Darwin blocked the effort. Five minutes later no-one got a touch to a Rainford cross from the byline along the Darwen goal line.

A rare Darwen corner was met powerfully by Jason Jones, but headed well over the bar.

With nine minutes to go, Hickey appeared to beat the Darwen offside trap and headed towards goal. Joe Darwin again had to rush from goal and made Hickey hit the side netting.

Bootle then made it five with a wonderful individual effort by Rainford, whose run beat two Darwen defenders and ended with an unstoppable volley past Darwin in goal.

In stoppage time, Darwen made the score a bit more respectable, when Jon Stephenson attempted a scissors kick in the area. However, the slightly mis-hit shot deceived Mawdsley in goal, and the ball bounced over his head into goal.
