Kick It Out

22/9/2007 DARWEN 2 PENRITH 1

Darwen are through to the first round proper of the FA Vase, after this second qualifying round win over opponents Penrith from the Northern League.

Manager Steve Mullen, who was without the services of Ricky Fogarty, and both regular full backs Matt Anderton and Lee Stott through injury, made the decision to pull back Dominic Slaven and Neil Almond into the two defensive roles. Nathan Worrell was making his first team debut in goal.

In the tenth minute, Penrith’s Summersgill was called into action, in order to drop on a low shot on the turn by Ben Stanford. Five minutes later the away side created their first chance, as a pass from the wing found Hodgson on the edge of the box. He blasted his effort over the bar, under pressure from the Darwen defence. A dangerous ball was then fed along the goal kick line by Lynn, but no-one managed to get a touch.

On 26 minutes, Ben Stanford again turned and hit a low volley, from a pass by Stuart Telfer. Summersgill did well to get two hands to the ball and push it away to safety.
07-08 DARWEN V PENRITH - GOAL 1 CELEBRATIONS
Darwen’s first goal on 35 minutes took everyone by surprise. Matt Morris was fouled outside the area, and as Penrith lined up to defend the free kick, Dennis Hill took the ball early, curving a low shot inside the left post, leaving the Summersgill stranded.

Penrith were caught again a few minutes later as Neil Almond took the ball half the length of the field unchallenged. His strike from twenty five yards was just wide of the post.

A high hopeful lob from Lynn into Darwen’s area had Nathan Worrell back peddling. He got hands to the ball but failed to hold it. The ball rolled out to the waiting Fletcher, whose return was cleared off the line by Craig Chadwick. A last ditch tackle by Martin Parkes prevented another Penrith goal opportunity.

Just before half time, Dominic Slaven ran downfield to receive a pass. He back headed the ball into the path of Ben Stanford, and Summersgill had to make another fine save from the resulting strike.

Half Time: Darwen 1 Penrith 0

At half-time, Ben Stanford, who had been carrying an injury, was replaced by Jon Stephenson. The away side went close on 63 minutes, as a back header from Milne shaved the Darwen post, and the move was repeated at the other end as Summersgill caught a Neil Almond attempt at his near post.
07-08 DARWEN V PENRITH - GOAL
Penrith drew level on 69 minutes, when Blaylock beat Nathan Worrell to a twenty five yard cross from the right, and put a deft header over the Darwen keeper into the net.

The Northern League side started to put some pressure on the Salmoners, but with four minutes to go were caught by the best move of the match. Jason Jones gathered the ball in his own half, sped down the left wing, and then cut inside, avoiding several tackles on the way. Dennis Hill received the pass on the right edge of the box, and chipped the ball into the danger area. The Penrith defence had been pulled apart by the move, and Matt Howarth was on hand to net the winner.
