Kick It Out

25/8/2007 DARWEN 2 CHEADLE TOWN 0

Darwen made it two home league wins out of two with this result, and moved up to seventh in the Vodkat league Division 2, leaving Cheadle still looking for their first win of the season.

The match was devoid of any meaningful action for the first 25 minutes, until a free kick taken by Dennis Hill near the touchline curled into the away side’s area. A defender stuck a foot out to half clear the ball, but it fell at Ben Stanford’s feet, and he returned it crisply into the net.

Cheadle’s first chance appeared two minutes later when Myers dispossessed Neil Almond in midfield. The forward had a clear shot at goal, but sliced his effort well wide. The visitors had a free kick a minute later. Cotterill received and controlled the ball well, turned his defender, but the volley just went the wrong side of the post with Darwen keeper Ross Dawson stranded.

Five minutes before half-time, Ricky Fogarty latched onto a clearance and made a run down the left wing. He struck a pass through the area towards Cheadle’s right hand post, but before Mellor had time to gather, Jason Jones, having anticipated the pass, stepped in to slide the ball past the keeper.

With a minute to go, the home side had another let-off, as Smith turned past Craig Chadwick to lift a shot just over the bar.

Half Time: Darwen 2 Cheadle Town 0

With the second half barely a minute old, Darwen had the ball in the net again, but Ben Stanford was penalised for a push on Mellor while scoring. Another combination move between Fogarty and Stanford twelve minutes later resulted in the Darwen number nine turning the defender, but shooting just over the bar.

On 65 minutes, substitute Dominic Slaven passed to Ricky Fogarty, who ran down the byline and into the area, beating two players on the way, but then mis-hit his shot over the bar. Jason Jones came close to scoring a second, after a Stanford / Fogarty combination put him through on goal. The ball went just by the Cheadle post with the keeper beaten.

Cheadle came closest to scoring a few minutes later. A free kick by Brocklehurst just outside the Darwen area floated over Ross Dawson, but landed on the crossbar, bouncing away to safety.

On 73 minutes, Ricky Fogarty was first onto a free kick taken by Daniel Finch inside the Darwen half. He chipped the out rushing Mellor, but the ball landed on the roof of the net.

The final chance of the game fell to the visitors. Mellor’s kick from his area was chased by Roberts. His volley from thirty yards flew by Darwen’s right post.
