Kick It Out

29/9/2007 DARWEN 0 ASHTON ATHLETIC 1

Darwen got the upper hand towards the end of this defence dominated match, but fell to a late goal against high flying Ashton Athletic in this Vodkat League Division Two match.

On ten minutes, Gallanders produced a great turn near the byline to outfox two Darwen defenders. Neil almond managed to get a head the dangerous cross away to safety. Five minutes later Sharpe got his head to a Bennett cross, but under pressure from Daniel Finch, put the attempt over the bar.

On twenty five minutes, Stuart Telfer hooked a shot into the arms of Hewitt, and put another volley on the run five minutes just wide of the post. He found himself a clear run on goal ten minutes later. Hewitt rushed out to block, and Telfer’s chip cleared both keeper and bar.

Just on half time, the home side looked certain to open the scoring, after Dennis Hill lobbed a cross into the area. Three Darwen players got off shots, all blocked by a desperate Ashton defence.

By half time, very few good chances had been created by either side, with Nathan Worrell in the Darwen goal not needing to make any save of note.

Half Time: Darwen 0 Ashton Athletic 0

Ten minutes into the second half, Darwen were awarded a free kick on the edge of the away area for a foul on Matt Morris. As Ashton started to sort out their defence, Jason Jones quickly took the shot, but the alert Hewitt in goal just managed to get gloves on the effort to tip it over the bar.

On seventy two minutes, a brave Ashton defender got his body in the way of a Jason Jones rocket inside the area.

A few minutes after the away side had made their third and last substitution, they were reduced to ten men when Sherlock appeared to sustain an ankle injury after a clash with Martin Parkes, and had to be helped from the field.

Darwen upped the pressure in this last ten minutes, as Ashton now concentrated on defending a possible point, with a Stuart Telfer going closest with a chip over Hewitt just clearing the bar.

As the home side strained to get a winner, they had pushed well upfield, and were caught out by a quick Ashton break. Potter latched onto a clearance, raced down the right touchline, then hooked a cross over to the left of Darwen’s area. White, who had followed the break, controlled the ball, and squeezed a shot under Nathan Worrell in goal.

Ashton then defended desperately for the last few minutes in the face of a Darwen onslaught, and were mightily relieved when the final whistle sounded.

The Salmoners were very unfortunate not to get anything from this game, as they played some nice football, and another time, a performance like this would have secured victory.
