6/10/2007 FA VASE DARWEN 2 ATHERTON LR 3 (AFTER EXTRA TIME)

Darwen gave a spirited performance against the team from Division One of the Vodkat League in this FA Vase first round proper cup tie.

Atherton gave the home side a scare in the fourth minute as a hopeful punt upfield bounced nicely for Arnold. His lob went over Nathan Worrell in goal, but also well over the bar.

Four minutes later, Darwen were in front when Jason Jones controlled a lofted pass to the right of the box, and put a low shot inside the left post. On ten minutes, Daniel Finch put a header just wide from a Dennis Hill corner.

The away side had the ball in the net on fifteen minutes, after a well worked free kick between Derefaka and Morris saw Berry slotting in the cross, but he was deemed to be in an offside position. However, they were successful ten minutes later, as tall defender Darren Norman rose above Martin Parkes to head home a free kick.

Atherton had another opportunity three minutes later as they were awarded a free kick inside the penalty area for a back pass. Ten Darwen defenders managed to block the shot.

The home side were back in front on forty minutes when Darwen debutant Paul Crompton was barged over inside the area by goal scorer Norman. Jason Jones made no mistake from the spot.

Jon Stephenson went close when his strike on the turn was well blocked by Atherton keeper Clare, and the away side had a great opportunity to square the match just before half-time as a cross from Coppin got tangled in the feet of Berry, but ran to the unmarked McAllister. With half an open goal to aim for, he screwed his effort wide.

Half Time: Darwen 2 Atherton LR 1

Five minutes after the restart, Atherton’s Darren Norman hit a low snap shot from twenty yards, through a ruck of players. Worrell in the Darwen goal must have only seen the ball at the last minute, but dived quickly to palm the shot away.

Ten minutes into the second half, the home side were reduced to ten men, as Jason Jones was sent off for using an elbow.

Atherton snatched an equaliser after 82 minutes. A throw on the left resulted in a cross-field lob into the area. Coppin timed his run to perfection to get on the end of the pass to bury the ball in the back of the net, thus forcing extra time in the match.

Ninety Minutes: Darwen 2 Atherton LR 2

The away side created the first chance in extra time when Nathan Worrell got down well to smother a shot from Arnold, then at the other end Clare just managed to get fingertips to a Paul Crompton strike.

Stuart Telfer then made a solo run to the edge of the Atherton area, but saw his volley go by the post with the keeper stranded.

The game seemed to be heading for a replay until with five minutes remaining, Jay Norman got a glancing header to a hopeful cross. The ball sailed over Nathan Worrell in goal, hit the far post and rebounded into the net.
