8/9/2007 DAISY HILL 1 DARWEN 3
Darwen won a deserved first away win of the season at New Sirs, in a
match they controlled for most of the 90 minutes. The victory has
moved them up to sixth place in the Vodkat League Division Two.
Jason Jones was suspended for this game, so manager Steve Mullen
moved Stuart Telfer back into midfield.

The home side’s goal was put under pressure from the start, with
Moore punching away two crosses, and then having to scramble away a
well hit shot from the edge of the area by Dennis Hill.
The first goal arrived on fourteen minutes. A weak home attack was
broken down by Craig Chadwick, who passed the ball sideways to Matt
Anderton. A through pass from Anderton found Stuart Telfer, who
continued the run down the right wing, and put in a low cross.
Defenders failed to clear, and Ricky Fogarty was on hand to steer
the ball into the net.

Daisy Hill surprisingly levelled the game twelve minutes later, when
a move down the right, involving Hynes and Houghton, ended in the
latter putting a low cross in from the edge of the area. Bland
managed to get in front of Daniel Finch to put a very good diving
header past Joe Darwin in goal.
This did not seem to affect the away team, as they again pressured
the Daisy Hill goal. After a couple of good saves by Moore, and some
panicky defending, Neil Almond made a great run down the left, then
pulled the ball back for Ricky Fogarty, whose volley beat the
keeper, but Whitaker, on the line, managed to get a foot to deflect
the ball away. Fogarty did not give up, ran to retrieve the ball as
it was going for a corner, and put a cross along the goal line.
Stuart Telfer was waiting by the far post, and put the ball away
from a narrow angle.

Two minutes later, Moore fumbled another cross under pressure from
Ben Stanford, but a defender managed to clear just in time. At the
other end Joe Darwin blocked a shot near the post from Fairhurst,
and the home side were very unlucky before half time when a
well-timed bicycle kick from Bland crashed onto the Darwen
cross-bar.
Darwen had several more chances, as the game went into extra time.
Ben Stanford latched onto a cross, rounded Moore, but the ball
trickled out of play before he could collect it. Lee Stott ran down
the left and put in a dangerous low cross, but no-one got a touch.
Moore also made a wonderful double save from Ricky Fogarty.

Half Time: Daisy Hill 1 Darwen 2
Fogarty picked up a calf injury, and was replaced by Jon Stephenson
at the start of the second half.
Five minutes in, Fairhurst got behind the Darwen defence, with a
clear run on goal. Joe Darwin rushed out, and fouled the defender
just outside the area. Referee Pope gave the home side a free kick,
but fortunately for Darwin did not take any further action.

The game started to produce fewer chances, but Lee Stott went close
with a thirty yard volley, which just cleared the home cross-bar.
A few minutes after coming on, Matt Howarth produced the cross from
the right for Darwen’s third goal. Moore pushed out Jon Stephenson’s
initial strike, but the front man reacted quickest to net the
rebound.
Daisy Hill were then reduced to ten men when Veitch was dismissed
for upending Stuart Telfer, his second bookable offence.

With five minutes left, Fairhurst again beat the Darwen offside
trap, and unleashed a powerful shot just inside the area, producing
a marvellous one-handed save from Joe Darwin.
