Report
Darwen gave a much improved performance but fell demoralisingly
short of a point after a last minute winner from Cheadle. The
two Darwen goals were both from defensive errors and they paid the
price for a lack of concentration in a game that they deserved a
point from.
Cheadle started the better having an early shot cleared off the
line. Darwen grew into the game forcing a couple of chances
and an even first half looked to be petering out into a draw.
Then a short corner found a Cheadle player on the edge of the box
and Stephen Maynard arrived a little clumsily on the scene to bring
down the opposition player. The referee gave a penalty and it
was competently finished with Harle having no chance.
The second half saw Darwen create more chances and on a bouncy
pitch any shot had a chance of going in. Harle found this out
when a shot bounced up and ricocheted off his nose for a corner.
Darwen became more confident but their best chance of a goal looked
to be with the long ball. One of these created the goal as a
Taylor clearance was headed on by Neil Grime and Daniel Aspin weaved
his way through the home defence to score. However Darwen
failed to capitalise and seemed to tire late on, Rhendon Pillay
missing their best chance to find a winner. With seconds
remaining a ball across the area was cleared poorly a couple of
times and eventually given away to the opposition midfield and a
swerving shot past Harle sealed Darwen's fate.
