Thomas Brindle

Thomas Brindle was born in Darwen in 1861, He had been a member of the FA Cup semi-final team of 1881 beaten by eventual winners The Old Carthusians 4-1, In March 1880 he became the first Darwen FC player to represent England, Having successfully negotiated his way through a North v South trail match at the Oval on the 6th March, he made his debut in a friendly game against Scotland, played in Glasgow on the 13th March 1880.
In the book "An English football Internationals Who's Who" Written by Douglas Lamming, he discribes the Darwen left full-back as: "a powerful strong kicking back and a real workhorse".
The game against Scotland ended in a 5-4 victory for the Scots ( the most goals England have ever scored in a game and lost ) but two days later England were victorious when they met Wales in Wrexham and beat them 3-2 Thomas Brindle not only played in this game but scored the winning goal as well! -- He is the 16th youngest player ever to represent England at full international level.
By the time Darwen joined the Football League in 1891 Thomas had moved to West Bromwich Albion.
Below shows the 20 youngest players ever to represent England at full International Level
with Thomas listed in 16th place. This list will have to be revised with the inclusion of Evertons Rooney who became the youngest ever in 2002.
