Thomas Johnson

Tom was born in Dalton Lancashire on the 19th August 1901. and
signed for Darwen in 1936. A England International Tom was
idolised in Manchester and Liverpool during a career lasting 20
years. He joined Manchester City in 1919 and by the time he moved
to Everton in 1930 he had wrote himself into Man City folklore.
Only one man in the history of City has ever scored more goals
than Tom ( Eric Brook) but no man has ever beaten Tom's record of
38 goals in a season for City in 1928/29 (in only 39 games) Tom
was a member of City's F.A. cup final team that lost to Bolton in
1926. During his career at City Tom won England caps and
represented the Football league many times. When City sold Tom to
Everton for £6,000 in March 1930 it caused a outcry in Manchester,
and to rub salt in the wounds Tom played a leading role in
Evertons F.A. cup final win over City in 1933 which they won 3-0.
At Everton Tom teamed up with Dunn and Dean ( Dixie) to become the
most prolific scoring trio in the history of Everton football
club, helping Everton score a remarkable 116 goals in the
Championship winning season of 1931/32. Tom later moved to
Liverpool and played 35 games for the Pool before signing for
Darwen. With the outbreak of the Second World War Tom retired from
Competitive football. Tom died in 1973 aged 71.
