Fergus
Hunt | ![]() |
A journeyman and prolific goalscorer of his time, Fergus
Hunt began his footballing career in junior football with Mexborough before joining
Middlesborough Ironopolis, in their pre League days.
He was transferred to
Darwen FC in 1895 and became a firm favorite with the Barley Bank fans, he was
the leading scorer in both the 1895/6 and 1896/7 seasons
At the end of the
1896/7 season Darwen cut the "summer" money paid to players during the
summer break this caused friction between some of the players and the club officials
leading to the exit of some of the better players in 1897, Fergus was one of these
players and he left to join the Woolwich Arsenal in 1897.
He made his debut
for the Arsenal on the opening day of the 1897/8 season versus Grimsby Town (1st
September 1897)
He finished his first season with the club as the leading
goalscorer with fifteen goals in twenty four games which included a hat trick
in a 9-0 victory over St Albans in a FA cup tie.
In the 1898.9 season he again
was the leading goalscorer with fifteen goals in 31 games, including another hat
trick against Luton Town on New Years eve 1898.
However the signing of Frank
Lloyd in 1899 meant first team football was shared between the two. Not happy
with the situation Furgus moved to the West Ham United in the summer of 1899.
Fergus
spent two seasons playing in the Southern League with the Hammers before rejoining
the Woolwich Arsenal for the second time in October 1902.
In his second spell
with the club which spanned less than 8 months,he played in only 3 league matches
The lack of first team chances led Fergus to move to Fulham in the Southern League
in 1903, playing for the club for two seasons before returning to League Football
with Burton Albion in 1905/6 season.
He retired from football in 1906.
His
only Honour was a Kent League Championship Medal with the Woolwich Arsenal
He
played 257 Football League / Southern League / Kent League / Football Aliance
games scoring 137 goals.
